READING FOR OTHERS

"Reading For Others" Service Project is the culminating event for each one of our yearly programs. The purpose of this is to empower kids to make a hand-on difference in their community and to prove to them that reading really does make a difference. It is only plus that hundreds of at-risk children are encouraged to read in the process!

We have experienced incredible success during each "Reading For Others" Service Projects. For two months, members read and find sponsors for their reading (We have proven results! So far, each club chapter has read an average of 31,760 pages for each service!) However, the motivation for reading is not something that they can get for themselves, but something that they can give to others, appealing to the innate desire of middle school students to make their marks on the world.

The "Reading for Others" Service Project continues with members have a shopping spree for books with all the money they have raised. They then go to the children's charity of their own choice to distribute the books hands-on. It is precious to see the eyes of an at-risk child receive a new book to keep. Middle school students are empowered in that they know that their reading efforts really matter and really make a difference. The bond formed between the Need To Read Book Club member and the book recipient are truly amazing. It is not rare to see an at-risk book recipient curled up in the lap of book club member, as they are sitting on the ground and reading.

Note: We provide facilitators with all resources for "Reading For Others" Service Project through our Members-Only website.

what people are saying

"I have been in the NTRBC all this year. I initially joined so I'd get better as a reader and become more intelligent, but I've found out there is so much more to it! I love reading and sharing with others about the books. The teachers really seem to enjoy it, too, and it is fun getting to know them outside of the classroom!" -NTRBC book club member
