why it works!

Need To Read Book Club turns middle school students on to READING, despite socio-economic and reading levels, through incentives that meet the needs and interests they all have in common.

Through CHOICE and OWNERSHIP:
  • Students CHOOSE to be in the Need To Read Book Club.
  • Students CHOOSE the books from our list of multi-genre, multi-reading level, global perspective books they get to keep and OWN, building their personal libraries.
  • Students CHOOSE the local children’s charity that will benefit from their service.
  • Students CHOOSE the books they personally distribute into the hands of  at-risk children. Students OWN the inspiring results of their reading and service!

Through EXPRESSION:
  • Book discussion questions are provided that encourage and validate students’ personal ideas and experience through “big picture” ideas and reading application.
  • Students feel intelligent as they make personal connections and support and
share their ideas through reading and book discussion. Students encourage and learn from one another.
  • Book discussion helps students identify their personal leadership qualities to make a difference.

  • Through FUN:
  • Amazingly creative and FUN web-based resources are provided for teacher facilitators. Resources include Book Discussion, Reader’s Theatre/Drama, Guest Speaker, Field Trip,Craft, Game (including Need To Read BIG GAMETM), Media, and Snack ideas.
  • Teacher facilitators get excited because of the success they experience through Need To Read Book Club’s cross-curricular themes and critical thinking “big picture idea” approach.
  • Teacher facilitators enjoy Need To Read Book Club as much as their students because the resources make it easy for them to make it fun. Their enthusiasm is contagious.

Through MAKING A DIFFERENCE:

  • * The Reading For OthersTM Service Project is the culminating event of the year and proves to students that reading makes a powerful difference – hands on!
  • All Need To Read Book Club program resources help students recognize themselves as those who can make a big difference in their community through READING and SERVICE.

what people are saying

"I have been in the NTRBC all this year. I initially joined so I'd get better as a reader and become more intelligent, but I've found out there is so much more to it! I love reading and sharing with others about the books. The teachers really seem to enjoy it, too, and it is fun getting to know them outside of the classroom!" -NTRBC book club member
